OPA 12 – Whatever Happened To… #2

Call me resistant to change, but I miss some of the functionalities that we had in Oracle Policy Modeller version 10.x when working in Microsoft Word. Top of my list was the “Ignore” button, to tell the compiler to ignore the text that was selected while I worked out what was wrong with it…:)

The other day whilst using the new version, Version 12.2, as I was quite dissapointed by the removal of this and a fair number of other icons, I came upon the idea to investigate the Word Template that was being used in version 12. I was pretty certain that the Word Template would not have been completely rewritten – I reckoned that there would be traces of the old macros somewhere in there.

And of course we are not probably supposed to do that – after all the Toolbar is delivered as-is, and we are not going to reverse engineers anything – but I thought it would be interesting. And after a few searches I found that most of the old macros are still in the new version. They can be found by looking in the Word options to customize the Ribbon or Toolbar.

On the left you can see the HaleyOfficeRulesMain macros – including my favorites Ignore, Rule Name and a few others. I was able to add them to my Quick Access Toolbar, which is easy to display either above or below the Ribbon. I’m sure if someone had more time and energy they could do more. But let us keep it short and sweet.

Adding them to the Quick Access Toolbar activates, for each Icon, the “Modify” button which you can see in the screenshot above, right at the bottom of the right hand column near “Customizations:”. This button allows us to change the Label, the Icon and the Tool-tip.

Now I have my favorite functions back on my Word documents and the three buttons I created (Rule Name, Commentary, Ignore) all worked fine and the Validation didn’t cause any issues. Of course these are only for demonstration purposes and we should not depend on them. But hey, that’s cool!

Until next time.
